The pub is situated in Coggeshall, a small picturesque town packed with timber framed buildings and a large 15th Century church. It is midway between Colchester and Braintree in North Essex on the old Roman military road leading to St Albans.
The Towns history began in 1140 when a Cistercian Abbey was built. The monks kept sheep and from this grew the cloth trade which boosted Coggeshalls prosperity for 300 years. The town was famed for a type of cloth called Coggeshall whites and later Coggeshall tambour lace.The remains of the Abbey, a chapel and the Grange barn can still be seen today.
Antique and craft shops add interest to a village centre which mainly serves local needs. The town has a small tourist trade. |
